The many will tell you, to be knowledgeable you have to read a lot and refer to specialists. My experience tells me it's unnecessary.
The way to a 100% effective knowledge is to search only for what you need on an online search engine. You can of course read books, to increase your knowledge base foundation, but practical know-how are usually very few pieces of information and you don't need to read entire books just to know about them.
For example, I learned home gardening only through pieces of information collected from Google searching, skimming some gardening books and trial and error.
One day I wanted to know about the types of soil, I searched. If adding charcoal to the soil makes a difference.. I searched. I needed to know more about the types of Basil, I searched. What planting mint needs, I searched. How much water to apply? I found online cheat sheets.
The academic way of learning is as usual, very boring. When you search any source of knowledge, Google, Internet, Books, etc. your mind gates are open to save knowledge instantly and somehow permanently because it is hungry for a specific type of information. But when you read entire textbooks without defining targets, your brain is bored and you may probably forget a lot of what you read.
